Introduction

Chord Colors is made by Serendipity Apps LLC, based in the United States. This policy explains what is collected when you use the Chord Colors website at chordcolors.com, the web version of the app at app.chordcolors.com, or the Chord Colors iOS app. It covers why that information is collected, how long it is kept, and what you can do about it. Where a practice applies to only one of those, it says so. You can reach us about anything here at [email protected].

Data Collection

There is no account to create, and nothing in the app or on the website requires your name or your email address. The one exception is that the app occasionally offers an optional survey, which opens a Typeform form inside the app. That survey is voluntary, you can dismiss it, and anything you type into it goes to Typeform rather than into the app. We do use third-party services for analytics, crash reporting and purchases, and those services receive technical information about your device and your visit, including your IP address and a randomly generated identifier that tells one browser or device apart from another. Privacy laws treat that information as personal data, so we would rather name it plainly than call it anonymous. We do not use it to work out who you are, we do not combine it with data from anywhere else, and we do not sell it or share it for advertising.

Analytics

On the website we use Google Analytics 4 to see which pages people find useful and how many people go on to the App Store. When analytics is running, Google receives the pages you viewed, an approximate location worked out from your IP address, and basic details about your browser and device. Google Analytics also sets two cookies in your browser, named _ga and _ga_XD0CX13QXR. They last up to two years, and they let us tell one browser apart from another across visits. They carry no name and no contact detail.

In the app we use Amplitude for event tracking to collect usage data. This information helps us understand how people interact with the app and make improvements. The data collected may include:

This data carries no name and no contact detail, and we do not use it to work out who you are. Amplitude is configured not to record IP addresses, and the app sends its events to Amplitude's European server zone. It does receive a device identifier that iOS generates for this app. The web version at app.chordcolors.com runs no analytics at all.

Crash Reporting

In the app we use Sentry to collect crash reports so we can find and fix bugs. When the app crashes, Sentry receives your device model, your iOS version, your IP address, and a description of what the app was doing when it failed. We use this only to fix the app.

In-App Purchases

Chord Colors offers an optional in-app purchase to unlock all features. Payment itself is processed by Apple, and we never receive or store your card details. We use RevenueCat to keep track of whether the unlock has been bought or restored, and Superwall to decide which upgrade screen to show you. Both receive a device identifier and the purchase status, which is what lets the app remember that you have paid.

Third-Party Services

We use the following third-party services.

These companies act as our service providers and are not permitted to use what they receive for their own purposes. Each publishes its own privacy policy, and those are worth reading if you want the detail. Most of them are based in the United States and process data there. Amplitude is the exception, because the app is configured to send its events to Amplitude's European server zone.

Two of these receive your IP address no matter what your privacy settings say. Adobe Typekit receives it when the page requests the font, and Cloudflare receives it for every request, because it is the server the site runs on. We also offer image cards that other websites can embed, so when another site embeds one, our host receives the IP address of that site's visitor even though they never came to chordcolors.com.

Data Retention

Google Analytics event data is kept for 2 months and is then deleted, which is the retention setting on our property. Reports built from that data are aggregated, and Google keeps those without a fixed end date. Amplitude event data is kept for as long as the app is in service, because we have not set an expiry on it, and we would rather say that than name a deletion schedule we do not actually run. Sentry crash reports are kept for 30 days and are then deleted automatically. The Google Analytics cookies expire on their own after two years, and you can delete them from your browser at any time before that.

Your Data and Your Requests

We hold no name, no email address and no account, so in most cases we have no way to look up the records that came from you, and we would rather say that plainly than promise a process we cannot actually run. You can still remove nearly all of it yourself. Clearing your browser cookies for chordcolors.com deletes the Google Analytics identifier, and from that point your browser is a new browser as far as we can tell. Deleting the app removes the identifier the app was using. If you believe we hold information about you and you want it removed, write to [email protected] and we will do what we can, and we will tell you honestly if we cannot find anything.

Your Choices

On the website, if your browser sends a Global Privacy Control signal or a Do Not Track signal, we do not load Google Analytics at all. The script is never fetched and no analytics cookie is ever set. Some browsers send that signal by default and others offer it as a privacy setting, so it is worth looking at what your own browser does. Blocking the script with a content blocker works just as well. Nothing on the site stops working when analytics is off. That signal does not stop the font from loading and it does not stop our web host from seeing the request, as described above.

In the app there is no switch to turn analytics off, and there is one point of confusion worth clearing up. iOS may show you a prompt asking whether Chord Colors can track your activity across other companies' apps and websites. Chord Colors does not do that, it shows no ads, and it does not read the advertising identifier. Your answer to that prompt does not change the usage and crash data described above. If you want that collection to stop, deleting the app is what stops it.

Children

Chord Colors is a music learning tool for a general audience. It is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has given us information, write to [email protected] and we will delete whatever we can find.

Your Settings on This Device

The website saves a few preferences in your own browser so it remembers how you like it, including your light or dark theme, your tempo, and which instrument you prefer. These stay on your device, they are never sent to us, and clearing your browser storage removes them.

Security

We keep the number of places your data can travel deliberately small. The website is served only over HTTPS, and the accounts behind the services listed above are protected with two factor authentication. No service can promise perfect security, and we will not pretend otherwise.

Where This Applies

Chord Colors is operated from the United States. Most of the data described here is processed in the United States by the providers listed above, and the app's usage events are processed in the European Union, because Amplitude is configured to use its European server zone.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy. When we do, we will change the date at the top of this page, and when a change affects what we collect or what we do with it, we will say so on this page rather than changing it quietly.
