About the A sharp Ionian Pentatonic scale

A sharp Ionian Pentatonic is used for pop, folk and melodic writing. Think of it as five bright notes drawn from the major scale. It is A Melodic Minor Pentatonic with the third raised.

Its notes are A, D, D, E, and A. The formula is 4 semitones H W 4 semitones H.

Also called Ryukyu Scale and Okinawan.

Two open-string notes belong to A Ionian Pentatonic, namely A and D. Down at the 1st fret of the A string lies the lowest A a guitar can play. The first three frets carry a complete octave of this mode, a genuine open-position shape.
