About the D Dorian b5 scale
D Dorian b5 is used for jazz solos and moody, unsettled passages. Think of it as a dorian minor with a flat fifth, dark and off balance.
Its notes are D, E, F, G, A♭, B, and C. The formula is W H W H 1½ H W. It is the second mode of C Harmonic Major.
Also called Maqam Karcigar.
In D Dorian ♭5, the open strings sound E, D, G, and B. A guitarist finds the lowest D at the 5th fret of the A string. The mode plays in open position, a whole octave of the scale falling within the first three frets.
