A flat Dorian #4 is used for klezmer and eastern European folk music. Think of it as a dorian minor with a raised fourth.
Its notes are A♭, B♭, C♭, D, E♭, F, and G♭. The formula is W H 1½ H W H W. It is the fourth mode of E♭ Harmonic Minor.
Also called Ukrainian dorian, Romanian Minor, and Mi Sheberach.
An unfretted guitar already sounds D and B from the key. A guitarist finds the lowest A♭ at the 4th fret of the low E string. A capo at the first fret lets a guitarist play A♭ Dorian ♯4 with G-shape fingerings.
