D Miyako-bushi (Japanese) is used for traditional Japanese melodies. Think of it as a Japanese five-note scale built on a spare flat second and flat sixth, the sound of the koto's kumoi-joshi tuning. It is D Phrygian Pentatonic with the seventh lowered.
Its notes are D, E♭, G, A, and B♭. The formula is H 4 semitones W H 4 semitones. It is the fifth mode of E♭ Chinese.

Three open-string notes belong to D Miyako-bushi (Japanese), namely A, D, and G. On guitar, the deepest D within reach is the 5th fret of the A string. The scale runs a complete octave from root to root inside the first three frets.
