About the F sharp Diminished scale
F sharp Diminished is used for jazz solos over diminished chords and tense, suspenseful film cues. Think of it as a symmetrical eight-note scale that alternates whole and half steps. It is F♯ Bebop Melodic Minor with the fifth lowered.
Its notes are F♯, G♯, A, B, C, D, D♯, and E♯. The formula is W H W H W H W H.
Also called Diminished Whole-Half and Octatonic.
The open-string notes A, D, and B all sit inside this mode. Down at the 2nd fret of the low E string lies the lowest F♯ a guitar can play. Placed at the second fret, a capo lets F♯ Diminished be played with E-shape fingerings.
