About the G flat Diminished scale

G flat Diminished is used for jazz solos over diminished chords and tense, suspenseful film cues. Think of it as a symmetrical eight-note scale that alternates whole and half steps. It is G Bebop Melodic Minor with the fifth lowered.

Its notes are G, A, A, C, C, D, E, and F. The formula is W H W H W H W H.

Also called Diminished Whole-Half and Octatonic.

A, D, and B are open guitar strings that sit inside this mode, ready to drone under a riff. A guitarist finds the lowest G at the 2nd fret of the low E string. A capo at the second fret brings G Diminished within reach of E-shape fingerings.
