G sharp Hirajoshi (Japanese) is used for traditional Japanese and koto music. Think of it as a Japanese five-note scale, minor with a flat sixth.
Its notes are G♯, A♯, B, D♯, and E. The formula is W H 4 semitones H 4 semitones. It is the second mode of E Chinese.
Also called Aeolian Pentatonic and Yona Nuki Minor.
The open-string notes E and B all sit inside the key. The lowest G♯ on a standard-tuned guitar sits at the 4th fret of the low E string. A capo at the first fret brings G♯ Hirajoshi (Japanese) within reach of G-shape fingerings.
