D flat Spanish Heptatonic is used for flamenco and Spanish-flavored music. Think of it as the Spanish gypsy scale, a phrygian dominant filled out to eight notes. It is D♭ Bebop Locrian with the fourth lowered.
Its notes are D♭, D, F♭, F, G♭, A♭, A, and C♭. The formula is H W H H W H W W. It is the third mode of A Bebop Major.
Also called Flamenco Scale and Spanish Eight-Tone.
In D♭ Spanish Heptatonic, the open strings sound E, A, D, and B. On guitar, the deepest D♭ within reach is the 4th fret of the A string. A capo at the first fret brings D♭ Spanish Heptatonic within reach of C-shape fingerings.
