G flat Spanish Heptatonic is used for flamenco and Spanish-flavored music. Think of it as the Spanish gypsy scale, a phrygian dominant filled out to eight notes. It is G♭ Bebop Locrian with the fourth lowered.
Its notes are G♭, G, A, B♭, C♭, D♭, D, and F♭. The formula is H W H H W H W W. It is the third mode of D Bebop Major.
Also called Flamenco Scale and Spanish Eight-Tone.
E, A, D, G, and B are open guitar strings that sit inside this mode, ready to drone under a riff. Down at the 2nd fret of the low E string lies the lowest G♭ a guitar can play. A capo at the second fret lets a guitarist play G♭ Spanish Heptatonic with E-shape fingerings.
